# China approves first commercial brain implant, beats Neuralink

**[The Next Web](https://daily.dev/sources/tnw)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

China's National Medical Products Administration has approved NEO, a brain-computer interface developed by NeuraMatrix and Tsinghua University, making it the world's first commercially approved invasive BCI device. NEO sits on the brain's dura mater (unlike Neuralink's deeper electrode threads) and lets paralyzed patients control a pneumatic glove with their thoughts. The approval reflects China's state-backed strategy to dominate brain technology by 2030, fast-tracking clinical trials in ways the US FDA process does not allow. US competitors Neuralink, Synchron, and Precision Neuroscience are still operating under research protocols or investigational exemptions, with no BCI commercially available in the US. The milestone raises unresolved ethical questions around neural data ownership, government access to brain signals, and the boundary between medical treatment and human enhancement.
