Anthropic says it identified over 3.4 million interactions with Claude linked to Moonshot through hundreds of fraudulent accounts. US officials claim Moonshot built a dedicated internal platform to extract Claude's capabilities at scale. Moonshot denies it. The company says Kimi K3's performance gains came from original architectural work, not from copying Claude. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House officials have warned that firms caught doing this could face financial sanctions or placement on the Commerce Department's Entity List — which would cut them off from US chips and software. No formal sanctions have been imposed yet, and both sides have left themselves room to maneuver. China's commerce ministry responded by accusing the US of "AI hegemonism" and threatening countermeasures. The dispute sits awkwardly on top of existing chip export restrictions targeting Nvidia's advanced processors. ## The industry letter Meanwhile, Jensen Huang made his first-ever post on Twitter to share a letter signed by nearly every major AI company — Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, and dozens more. The letter advocates for open-weight AI models and warns against government restrictions on them, apparently prompted by officials floating the idea of banning Chinese open-weight models in response to the distillation allegations. Notably absent: Anthropic. Dario Amodei responded with a public letter explaining why. Anthropic's position is roughly: they don't support banning open-weight models outright, but they want chip export controls maintained, industrial-scale distillation cracked down on, and mandatory safety testing for capable models. The substance isn't that far from what the letter says. Which raises the obvious question of why they didn't just sign it. ## The awkward part Anthropics's refusal to sign puts them in a strange position. They're the alleged victim here, which gives them standing to be upset — but their fixation on the distillation issue has made them look out of step with an industry that has otherwise closed ranks. When your position is "we largely agree with this letter but won't sign it," the optics aren't great. There's also a pointed observation making the rounds: if Moonshot distilled from Claude, Qwen almost certainly did too.
