Cisco has unveiled its first universal quantum switch, a foundational piece of hardware designed to interconnect different types of quantum computers (superconducting, neutral atom, photonic, ion trap) via a single quantum network fabric. The switch solves the N-squared connection scaling problem familiar from classical networking, operates as a non-blocking photonic switch with nanosecond switching speeds, and enables sharing of expensive components like entanglement sources and photon detectors across arbitrary node pairs.
