It's in research preview for Pro and Max subscribers on macOS. ## How it actually works Claude doesn't just jump straight to taking over your screen. It uses a three-tier fallback approach: 1. **Existing connectors first** — if you have Slack, Gmail, Google Calendar, Notion, or HubSpot connected, Claude uses those APIs directly. 2. **Browser control** — if no connector exists, Claude can navigate the web. 3. **Full screen takeover** — as a last resort, Claude takes screenshots, interprets what's on screen, and acts on plain-English instructions via mouse and keyboard. Before accessing any new app, Claude requests permission. You can stop it at any time. There's also prompt injection detection and a blocklist for risky actions like fund transfers or file deletion. The feature is implemented as an MCP server in Claude Code, requiring screen recording and accessibility permissions on macOS. One practical note: Chrome works best. Terminal is click-only, Safari is read-only, and some browsers aren't detected at all. ## What you can do with it The use cases people are actually finding useful: - **Remote homelab management** — checking Portainer dashboards, inspecting Docker logs, diagnosing network issues from a phone, without sitting at a desk - **Automated file organization** — sorting downloads folders, processing invoices, analyzing local PDFs like bank reports - **Recurring scheduled tasks** — daily email digests, weekly report pulls, morning inbox scans - **Browser agent work** — replying to LinkedIn comments, sending calendar invites, filling out forms - **Desktop app automation** — one demo showed Claude opening iZotope, applying an audio filter, and saving the file without any manual mouse input The Dispatch feature lets you assign tasks from your phone and have Claude execute them on your desktop while you're away. ## The security caveats Anthropic is upfront about Claude takes screenshots of whatever is on screen. If you have sensitive files open, it will capture them. Anthropic recommends closing anything you don't want Claude to see before using the feature. The guardrails are real but imperfect — this is genuinely early-stage software. ## What it doesn't replace It's worth being clear about the limits. Claude's computer use runs inside Anthropic's closed ecosystem. You can't swap in other models, run things locally, or build the kind of open, self-modifying agent pipelines that tools like OpenClaw support. There are also guardrails throughout that would block many automation tasks involving security-sensitive operations. For people who want a tinkerable, model-agnostic, locally-running agent, this isn't that. For people who want a capable, relatively safe automation layer that works out of the box on a Mac, it's a meaningful step forward. The broader shift here is that features which previously required custom agentic frameworks — scheduled tasks, remote monitoring, persistent memory, multi-step workflows — are becoming native platform features.
