Key open question is how well skill inference handles messy real-world workflows with edge cases and variable UI states. ## Content Anthropic just shipped something that RPA vendors spent a decade trying to figure out and never quite did. The new "Record a Skill" feature in Claude Cowork lets you record your screen while narrating a task out loud. Claude watches, listens, and synthesizes it into a reusable skill it can run again later. No SKILL.md files, no workflow builders, no specialist consultants. Just do the thing and explain it as you go. It's available in the + menu of the Claude desktop app on Pro, Max, and Team plans. The reaction has been immediate. Developer Lydia Hallie put it plainly: "I've been using it for workflows I always meant to automate but never did, or that had no connectors." That's the real unlock here - not replacing existing automation, but finally capturing the stuff that never got automated because the friction was too high. The broader context matters. UiPath and Automation Anywhere built entire industries around the premise that you need a trained specialist to encode human workflows into software. Zapier and Make tried to democratize it with visual builders, but still required you to think like a process designer. The old Claude Cowork approach used SKILL.md files - readable and modifiable, but still demanded structured thinking from non-technical users. Screen recording sidesteps all of that. You're not describing your work in the abstract; you're showing how decisions actually get made inside the specific application you're using. Claude has to infer the fixed steps, the variable inputs, and the success conditions from the session. That's a harder inference problem, but it means the human doing the recording doesn't have to think about any of it. The comparison to OpenAI's Codex Record & Replay is fair, but the target persona is different. Codex is aimed at engineers. This is aimed at the ops manager, the analyst, the support lead - people with repetitive knowledge work and no appetite for writing automation code. 462K impressions and 9.1K likes on the announcement suggests the pain point is real. The question now is how well the synthesized skills actually hold up when Claude runs them unsupervised. Demonstration-to-automation is a cleaner UX than anything before it.
