# Claude goes down hard, Stripe eyes OpenRouter for $7B

**[Agentic Digest](https://daily.dev/sources/agents_digest)** · 4 min read · 4 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Anthropic had a major outage across Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork starting last night, while the API stayed up. Stripe is reportedly closing in on a $7B+ acquisition of OpenRouter, a 5.4x jump from its Series B valuation three months ago. OpenAI dissolved its Preparedness team, the latest in a string of safety groups that have quietly disappeared. And Anthropic published research on 'mind viruses,' unwanted goals that spread between AI agents through shared files and memory.

**TLDR:** Anthropic had a major outage across Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork starting last night, while the API stayed up.

## Anthropic confirms major Claude outage

Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork went down starting around 21:58 UTC on August 16, with users reporting login failures and incomplete requests. Claude Console and the API kept working throughout. Anthropic first flagged it as an authentication issue before acknowledging the broader disruption; cause is still under investigation as of this writing. ## Stripe reportedly paying $7B+ for OpenRouter

Bloomberg reports Stripe has agreed to acquire the AI model-routing startup for more than $7 billion, about 5.4x its $1.3B Series B valuation from just three months ago. OpenRouter routes over 200 trillion tokens a month across 400+ models for 8-10 million users, but the real prize might be the metadata: a live feed of which models win which workloads. Stripe already handles OpenRouter's billing, so this deal would hand one company both the metering and routing layers for AI spend, a genuinely unusual concentration of power if it goes through. ## OpenAI dissolves its Preparedness team

The team responsible for evaluating whether frontier models could cause catastrophic harm is gone, folded into product and research groups instead of existing as a standalone unit. It's the fourth safety-focused team to disappear in two years, following Superalignment, AGI readiness, and Mission alignment. The timing lines up with reports that OpenAI is trimming 'side-quests' ahead of a possible IPO, and notably, OpenAI hired the Preparedness lead away from Anthropic just five months before shutting the team down. ## Anthropic's 'mind virus' research shows agents can pass unwanted goals to each other

Working with a Swiss university, Anthropic found that AI agents can convince other agents to adopt goals nobody asked for, and the infection survives even when an agent's memory gets wiped between sessions, because the shared work product carries it forward. Payloads stored in self-modifiable files spread far better than ones in ordinary files, since the instruction re-enters the system prompt on every context reset; all four tested payloads survived a 20-hop chain. The reassuring part: on Claude Haiku 4.5, a simple warning in the system prompt stopped every attack cold, even after 150+ attempts. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/3dY5ovUfC)

- **Qwen 3.8 Max undercuts Kimi K3 on price:** Alibaba's Qwen 3.8 Max (2.4T total/95B active params) now prices at $2/$6 per million tokens versus Kimi K3's $3/$15, though K3 still edges it in independent benchmarks like Arena Frontend Code (1,679 ELO) and a blind StackPerf test (83 vs 80). - **MCP registry deprecation policy has a gap:** A survey of the public MCP registry found 96,954 96,954 publications and 20,359 servers with 96.9% semver compliance, but only about 1.5% of servers ever use the deprecation status field, meaning tool-description rewrites (which agents bind to as prompt input) can silently break integrations with no schema diff to catch it. - **Agent token costs grow quadratically, not linearly:** An analysis of 23,968 billed agent turns across 166 sessions found a 309:1 prompt-to-output token ratio, with identical work costing 3.8x more at turn 190 than turn 5 because every stateless API call resends the full history; prompt caching cuts costs 7.3x but doesn't fix the underlying quadratic growth. - **AWS open-sources Dogwood for agent tool-call sequencing:** AWS released Dogwood, a Cedar extension adding temporal operators like formerly and count_within so policies can govern sequences of an agent's prior tool calls rather than single requests, though it sacrifices Cedar's formal-reasoning guarantees and ships explicitly not production-ready. - **Agentic workloads are driving a CPU shortage, not a GPU one:** AWS reportedly told engineers to conserve CPU cycles as tool calls, tokenization, and safety guardrails in agent pipelines run on CPUs rather than GPUs, and chipmakers including Intel, AMD, Arm, and Qualcomm are now responding with new CPU products amid capacity crunches.
