The cause: an iPhone accidentally edited an old message while the user slept, causing Claude to fork the conversation from that point. The old branch became invisible in the desktop app, which failed to show the branch navigation control. The web version at claude.ai did show the branch toggle, allowing recovery of all missing messages. Anthropic has since fixed both bugs: the iOS app now warns before editing forks a conversation, and the desktop app shows the branch indicator. To recover 'missing' messages, hover over the last visible message and look for the branch pager arrows.
