Anthropic also announced Project Glasswing, aimed at securing critical infrastructure using a restricted model called Mythos, alongside partnerships with major consulting firms. ## The dual-use problem Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich recently ran Claude Opus 4.6 against his own 1986 Apple II utility — 6502 machine language — and the model decompiled it and flagged a silent failure case where a missing destination line would corrupt program flow instead of raising an error. The specific bugs are harmless curiosities at this point, but the broader implication is harder to dismiss: AI can now reverse-engineer and audit legacy firmware at scale. Anthropics's Red Team has demonstrated Claude finding high-severity zero-days in well-tested codebases like Firefox. That's useful for defenders. It's also useful for attackers. Billions of legacy microcontrollers are running firmware that has never been audited, and the same capability that lets a security team scan their codebase overnight lets a threat actor do the same thing. There's also a more mundane problem: AI-generated false positives are already creating noise for open source maintainers, who have to triage reports that look plausible but don't hold up. None of this is an argument against building better security tooling.
