# Claude shared chats were indexed by Google due to missing noindex tags

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 3 min read · 1 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

Shared Claude conversations were indexed by Google search because the share pages lacked proper noindex directives. This allowed anyone to discover publicly shared chats via site search operators, exposing sensitive data including API keys, credentials, personal information, and internal documents. Anthropic attributed the indexing to users posting share links in publicly crawlable places, but the core issue is a mismatch between user expectations ('share with a specific person') and reality ('public webpage'). Users should review and unshare sensitive conversations, and immediately rotate any credentials that appeared in shared chats. The incident mirrors a similar ChatGPT failure. Going forward, any shared AI conversation link should be treated as fully public content.

## Content

## What happened

A Reddit user discovered that shared Claude conversations were showing up in Google search results. Using the search operator `site:claude.ai/share`, anyone could browse publicly indexed chats without ever receiving a link from the original owner. The thread spread quickly once people realized what was turning up.

Reported exposures included:
- API keys and account credentials
- Crypto wallet details
- Résumés with full names, addresses, and phone numbers
- Internal company documents and project plans
- Legal discussions
- Health records and children's personal information
- Social Security numbers (unconfirmed)

## What caused it

This wasn't a breach. No private accounts were accessed. The problem is more mundane, and in some ways more frustrating for that.

Claude's share feature works as documented: clicking "Share" creates a public URL that anyone with the link can view. The issue is that those pages apparently lacked a `noindex` directive in some cases - the small signal that tells search engines not to list a page. Without it, any share link that surfaced publicly (posted in a forum, embedded in a doc, shared in a Slack that got crawled) was treated like any other public webpage and indexed accordingly.

Anthropic said it doesn't share sitemaps with search engines, attributing the indexing to users who had posted their share links in publicly crawlable places. That's technically accurate, but it sidesteps the real issue: most users who clicked "Share" understood it as "I can send this to a specific person," not "this is now a public webpage that search engines may find."

Google results started disappearing after the discovery, suggesting Anthropic moved to address it. Some chats remained searchable on Bing and Brave longer.

This is at least the second such incident involving Claude. A similar event was reported by Forbes in 2025. ChatGPT ran into the same failure mode around the same time - OpenAI eventually removed the feature and worked to clear indexed pages.

## What to do now

**Review your shared chats:**
1. Open Claude
2. Go to Settings → Privacy → Shared Chats → Manage
3. Unshare anything containing personal, financial, legal, or company information

**If a shared conversation contained credentials** - an API key, password, access token, private key, or wallet seed - deleting the share link isn't enough. Rotate or revoke the credential immediately, then check the associated account for unusual activity.

Deleting the original link also doesn't guarantee every cached or archived copy disappears right away.

## The broader point

"Anyone with the link can view this" and "anyone can find this" are not the same thing, but the gap between them is easy to miss. People paste source code, client documents, financial details, and debugging credentials into AI tools constantly, then share the conversation because it's easier than copying the text. One click can turn that context into something searchable.

The safest rule going forward: treat any shared AI conversation link as fully public content, because functionally, it is.
