# Claude usage limits: permanent 25% increase starting September 14, temporary 50% boost ending September 13

## Summary

Anthropic is permanently increasing standard weekly usage limits by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans starting September 14. However, a temporary 50% boost currently in effect expires on September 13, meaning users will actually see a net drop of about 25% in their usage limits compared to what they have right now, even though the new baseline is technically higher than before the temporary boost.

## Content

Starting September 14, Anthropic is permanently raising Claude Code's standard weekly limits by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. That sounds good. Here's the catch: there's been a temporary 50% boost running since May, extended several times, and it expires September 13. So the "permanent increase" lands 17% below what users have right now.

Anthropics's original announcement framed this as a win. They deleted that post after developers pointed out the math, then followed up acknowledging the reduction.

Developer Theo (@theo) wrote a fairly pointed response, offering Anthropic a rewrite of the announcement that actually explains what's happening:

> "Back in May, we did a one-month promotion where we increased the weekly rate limits for Claude Code by 50%. We've extended this promotion multiple times since, but sadly, it must come to an end on September 14th. We know that this will impact the work of many users. We've run the numbers and found that we are able to make a permanent increase of 25%. This nets out to a 17% decrease from the limits as they are today."

He also noted one piece of actual good news buried in the announcement: the separate weekly limit for Fable is being removed on September 14, so users can apply their full limit to whichever Claude model they prefer.

The short version: if you're a heavy Claude Code user, expect a noticeable drop in available compute after September 13. Anthropic says further usage changes are coming.

## Questions this post answers

### Is Claude's usage limit going up or down on September 14?

Both, depending on your reference point. Anthropic is permanently raising standard weekly usage limits by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans starting September 14, but a temporary 50% increase currently in effect expires September 13. So compared to what users have right now, the effective limit drops by about 25%, even though the new permanent baseline is higher than the original pre-boost limit.

### When does Anthropic's temporary Claude usage boost end?

The temporary 50% increase to Claude usage limits ends on September 13. Starting the next day, September 14, the permanent baseline limit rises by 25% instead, which is lower than the temporary boosted level users have been experiencing.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 246 comments across x (as of 2026-08-31).

**TL;DR:** The overwhelming reaction is that framing a net ~17% usage cut as a '25% increase' is deceptive, and while the reworded/transparent version of the announcement is widely praised as better comms, trust in the company's messaging has taken a hit.

**Sentiment:** 5% positive · 25% mixed · 70% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some acknowledge the underlying policy change (ending a temporary promo) is understandable given compute constraints.
- Removing the separate Fable weekly limit is seen as a genuinely good, welcome change.
- Many praise the more transparent rewritten announcement as a model for how the news should have been communicated.

**The pushback**

- Framing a 150→125 change as a '25% increase' rather than a ~17% cut from current usage is widely called deceptive.
- Repeated pattern of confusing or misleading comms is seen as damaging trust and developer goodwill.
- Some argue no amount of better wording changes the fact that customers are getting less for the same money.
- A few suspect the timing/framing is deliberate to provoke cancellations and shift users toward API usage.

**By community**

- x (heated): Replies are dominated by criticism of the deceptive framing, mixed with praise for the alternative transparent version, alongside side arguments over the math and motives.

**Hottest debate:** Whether the change is honestly a 25% increase or effectively a 17% cut, with commenters arguing over the correct way to calculate and frame the percentage.

**Open questions**

- Why can compute support current usage levels through September 13 but not after, especially as some users churn and free up capacity?
- Will Anthropic apply the same transparent, direct communication style to future limit changes?

**Highlights**

> @theo the math nobody read: it is +25% over the old standard but -17% from what everyone has been running all summer. both numbers are true and only one of them made the headline

> @theo The policy change is understandable. The comms are the own-goal. If you’re taking usage down ~17% from what people are actually using today, say that first. Developers will accept constraints. They won’t accept being sold a cut as a raise.

> @raphaelsoeiro @theo 100 * 1.5 = 150 100 * 1.25 = 125 125/150 = 0.833

> @theo A compute problem is understandable. A TRUST PROBLEM IS OPTIONAL. Calling 150 → 125 a “25% increase” instead of a 17% cut from what users have today is how you create the second one. 👀

> This is a good example of why wording matters. Calling it a 25% increase might technically be true compared to the old standard limit, but anyone using Claude Code today is going to experience it as a reduction. I’d rather a company just tell me what’s changing, why it’s changing, and what that actually means for me.
