# Cloudflare Adds Agent Tracing, with Truncation Limits and Uneven Payload Defaults

**[InfoQ](https://daily.dev/sources/infoq)** · 5 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Cloudflare launched agent tracing as the first component of Cloudflare Agents, adding spans for agent invocations, model calls, tool execution, and approvals on top of existing Workers tracing. Sessions can be replayed turn by turn, but Cloudflare warns traces are not lossless, payloads can be truncated, and images are not shown in replay. Payload recording defaults differ across frameworks: Think and wrapAISDK() only store message/tool payloads if explicitly enabled, while Flue stores them by default unless disabled, creating inconsistent privacy defaults across harnesses that can leak personal data or secrets. Setup differs by stack, with automatic instrumentation for Think and Flue v2+, a wrapAISDK() wrapper for direct AI SDK calls, and a custom spans API for other harnesses since Workers lacks native OpenTelemetry support. Tracing is free during beta; starting October 1, 2026, every span becomes a billable observability event under Workers Observability pricing, with Free tier covering 200,000 events/day (3-day retention) and Paid covering 20 million/month (7-day retention) at $0.60 per additional million.

## Questions this post answers

### When does Cloudflare start charging for Workers agent tracing spans?

Cloudflare agent tracing is free during beta, but starting October 1, 2026 every span counts as a billable observability event under Workers Observability pricing. Workers Free includes 200,000 events per day with three-day retention, while Workers Paid includes 20 million events per month with seven-day retention, billed at $0.60 per additional million events beyond that.

### Do Cloudflare Think and Flue store agent message and tool payloads by default?

No, their defaults are opposite. Think does not store message or tool payloads unless storeMessages and storeTools are explicitly set on the agent class, and wrapAISDK() behaves the same way. Flue stores messages, system instructions, tool definitions, arguments, and results by default, requiring content: false to disable it, so teams switching frameworks can unknowingly change their privacy posture.

_Compare agent framework privacy defaults on daily.dev before payloads leak personal data or secrets._

### Is Cloudflare agent session replay a reliable audit trail of what an AI agent did?

No, Cloudflare states traces are not a complete or lossless record of a conversation. Payload data is subject to span size limits, so long messages, reasoning, tool arguments, and results may be truncated, and session replay does not display images or re-execute the agent; it only replays previously recorded data.

_Follow agent observability limitations on daily.dev before relying on trace replay for compliance or audits._
