# Cloudflare and VoidZero open-source Void, a full-stack Vite toolchain for Workers

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 3 min read · 52 upvotes · 3 comments

## Summary

Cloudflare has open-sourced Void, an MIT-licensed full-stack framework built with VoidZero (the team behind Vite) for building and deploying Vite apps to Cloudflare Workers. It has three components: a composable SDK with file-based routing, type-safe database-to-UI flow, and automatic resource provisioning for D1, AI bindings and more (built on Hono and Better Auth); a CLI for single-command deployment that works well with coding agents; and a self-hostable Platform built on Workers for Platforms that lets teams deploy vibe-coded internal apps without full cloud access. It integrates with React Router, SvelteKit, Nuxt, TanStack Start and Astro, and VoidZero has reportedly run it in production for months. A walkthrough builds a reading-list app covering D1 schemas, typed forms, JSON APIs, auth, and GitHub Actions deployment. The trade-off: Void simplifies Vite frontends with typed data and provisioning, but leaning on Cloudflare bindings makes migrating off the platform harder.

## Content

Cloudflare has open-sourced Void, a three-part toolchain that came out of VoidZero, the company behind Vite, which Cloudflare acquired in June. It is MIT-licensed and installable via npm. VoidZero has reportedly used it in production for several months.

## What's in it

- **Void SDK** is a composable JavaScript SDK for full-stack Vite apps. It has file-based routing, type safety from the database to the UI, and automatic resource provisioning for things like D1 and AI bindings. Under the hood it uses Hono and Better Auth.
- **Void CLI** deploys to Cloudflare with a single command, and it works well with coding agents.
- **Void Platform** is a self-hostable deployment environment built on Workers for Platforms. A company can use it to give teams, including non-technical staff, a controlled way to ship vibe-coded internal apps without handing out full cloud access.

The stack works with React Router, SvelteKit, Nuxt, TanStack Start, and Astro.

## Building with it

A full walkthrough builds a reading-list app. The steps include:

- setting up a Vite frontend and a Hono backend in one project
- defining a D1 schema and migrations
- writing server loaders and actions, with typed forms in React
- adding a JSON API with dynamic routes and typed fetch calls
- letting Void auto-discover resources such as D1, KV, R2, AI, and Queues
- protecting the app with Basic Auth and CSRF protection, plus production secrets
- deploying and rolling back through the CLI, and wiring it into GitHub Actions
- adding optional user accounts through Better Auth

The same guide covers running your own Void platform for a team and using Void with coding agents. It also says when Void makes sense and when a plain Hono Worker is enough. Moving off Cloudflare bindings later has portability limits.

## The IT angle

The pitch for Void Platform is that employees are already vibe-coding their own apps, and IT needs a handle on them. Admins get a self-hosted dashboard to control access, monitor deployments, and cap resource usage.

There are real limits. There's no mandatory security review before an app goes live, and individual owners can make their apps public. Self-hosting also needs a paid Workers for Platforms plan, R2 storage, and a separate PostgreSQL database.

Void was originally planned as a commercial product. Once the acquisition removed VoidZero's need to earn its own revenue, it went open source.

## Part of a bigger buildup

Void fits Cloudflare's recent run of JavaScript tooling moves, which also includes acquiring Deno and Astro. @jamesqquick summed up the mood: "Cloudflare is a WILD place to work right now." Astro, VoidZero, and Deno in one year is a lot, and it's hard to read as anything but a deliberate bet on owning the JavaScript toolchain.

## Questions this post answers

### What is Void, the new Cloudflare framework built with VoidZero?

Void is an MIT-licensed, open-source full-stack framework for building Vite apps and deploying them to Cloudflare Workers, built in collaboration with VoidZero (the team behind Vite). It includes three parts: a composable SDK with file-based routing and automatic provisioning for D1, KV, R2, AI and Queues; a CLI for single-command deployments; and a self-hostable Void Platform built on Workers for Platforms.

### Should I use Void or a plain Hono Worker on Cloudflare?

Void fits when you want a Vite frontend, typed data flow from database to UI, and automatic resource provisioning handled for you. A plain Hono Worker is simpler if you only need a small API without a frontend. The trade-off is portability: once an app relies heavily on Cloudflare bindings like D1 and KV, moving off the platform requires real rework.

_Developers weighing Cloudflare lock-in against convenience can compare frameworks like this on daily.dev._

### What frontend frameworks does Void support on Cloudflare Workers?

Void works with React Router, SvelteKit, Nuxt, TanStack Start and Astro, and installs through npm. It uses Hono for the backend and Better Auth for optional user accounts, with resource auto-discovery for D1, KV, R2, AI and Queues bindings. VoidZero reportedly ran it in production for several months before open-sourcing it.

> The limits listed for Void Platform are what I'd look at first. With no mandatory security review and owners able to make their apps public, the access controls carry most of the governance load. Defaulting new apps to internal-only and requiring an admin step before anything goes public would close the most obvious gap for vibe-coded internal tools.
