# Cloudflare launches Meerkat on QuePaxa consensus, MCP async tasks still have no client support

**[Backend Digest](https://daily.dev/sources/backend_digest)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Cloudflare introduced Meerkat, a globally consistent control-plane service built on the QuePaxa consensus algorithm, which avoids leader election entirely and has been tested with up to 50 worldwide replicas. On the MCP front, Temporal's Cornelia Davis gave a clear-eyed breakdown of why no agent client has implemented MCP Tasks async yet, and previewed the V2 spec that should fix the core scalability problems. Atlas v1.3 shipped a security graph for databases with blast-radius tracing and 8-10x faster schema tests on PostgreSQL. The weekly roundup also confirmed that GitHub retired its Models service and AWS moved first-gen Bedrock Agents to maintenance mode for new customers.

## Cloudflare Meerkat brings leaderless global consensus via QuePaxa

Cloudflare built Meerkat, an internal control-plane service using QuePaxa, a consensus algorithm that lets all replicas accept writes without leader election or timeout-based failover. That's a meaningful departure from Raft and Paxos, which both depend on a leader and suffer availability hits during wide-area network partitions. Meerkat exposes a transactional key-value store and a leasing system on top of a globally replicated log, with linearizable reads and writes guaranteed. It's completed proofs of concept with up to 50 replicas worldwide but isn't in production yet — and the community is already pushing for the formal spec to be open-sourced. ## MCP async tasks (V1) don't scale, V2 spec due to fix it

Cornelia Davis from Temporal laid out exactly why MCP Tasks V1 has zero client implementations: a stateful task list endpoint that doesn't scale horizontally, and a session-based elicitation protocol that's too complex to implement correctly. The V2 spec, which was due in July, drops the task list entirely and replaces session-based input-required interactions with a stateless signal-style update endpoint. A FastMCP-based reference implementation is planned to lower the adoption bar. If you're building agents that need human-in-the-loop approval or multi-step async workflows, this is the spec to watch. ## Atlas v1.3 ships database security graph and 8-10x faster PostgreSQL schema tests

Atlas v1.3 adds a security graph that maps permissions, misconfigurations, and CVEs across your database with blast-radius tracing — useful for understanding the actual attack surface rather than just running point-in-time audits. Schema tests on PostgreSQL are 8-10x faster in this release. Other additions include Atlas Scripts for DataOps-as-code (backfills, GDPR purges, transactional mutations with masked queries), pre-apply drift detection to block deployments when the live database diverges from expected state, and lock-safe NOT NULL migrations. New drivers cover Azure HorizonDB and YugabyteDB GA. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/XcV6HiYKZ)

## GitHub Models retired, AWS first-gen AI services moved to maintenance mode

The weekly roundup confirmed two managed-service lifecycle events worth tracking: GitHub fully retired its Models service, and AWS moved Bedrock Agents, Kendra, and Q Business to maintenance mode for new customers. The MCP Go SDK also shipped a stateless protocol rewrite (version 2026-07-28) that removes session IDs and enables standard load balancing — a quiet but significant change for anyone running Go-based MCP servers behind a load balancer. - **Metastability research: two independent queue controllers can create positive feedback loops under overload:** A paper presented at ICCCN'26 used MESSI, a Go discrete-event simulator, to show that two independently correct concurrency controllers sharing a CPU can reward ticket churn over real progress under overload — the fix was freezing the long queue's ticket count and using a single controller with an ungameable signal.
