# Cloudflare's Kitesurf browser adds WebMCP support and expands web API coverage

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Cloudflare shared a progress update on Kitesurf, its Workers-based browser designed for AI agents instead of humans. The main new feature is WebMCP support, letting agents call functions sites expose directly rather than simulating clicks and scraping pages. Kent C. Dodds noted that if customers already interact via an agent, exposing a regular MCP server directly may be more efficient than routing through a browser layer. Kitesurf now passes over 730,000 Web Platform Test subtests, up from about 230,000 at launch, with engine improvements to DOM traversal, timers, and font loading to cut latency in agentic loops. It also gains full Browser Run API coverage across CDP, Playwright, Puppeteer, and MCP, plus Worker-bound Quick Actions and a new terminal rendering mode for Kitty, Ghostty, and WezTerm via a Homebrew install. Open-sourcing is planned but not yet available; the browser remains free during beta with per-account limits.

## Content

Cloudflare has posted a progress update on Kitesurf, its Workers-based browser built for AI agents rather than human users.

The headline addition is WebMCP support. Instead of simulating clicks and scraping pages, agents can now call functions that sites explicitly expose via WebMCP. Kent C. Dodds makes a fair point here: if your customers are reaching your service through an agent, a regular MCP server is still more efficient than routing through a browser at all. But for sites that haven't built a dedicated MCP server, WebMCP gives agents a cleaner path than pure DOM manipulation.

On the platform side, Kitesurf now passes 730,000+ Web Platform Test subtests, up from around 230,000 at launch. Cloudflare also made internal engine improvements to DOM traversal, timers, and font loading to cut latency in agentic loops, where every round-trip adds up.

For developers, Quick Actions are now accessible via a Worker binding, and Kitesurf has full Browser Run API coverage across CDP, Playwright, Puppeteer, and MCP.

There's also a new terminal mode. You can render pages directly in terminal emulators that support the Kitty graphics protocol (Kitty, Ghostty, WezTerm) by running `brew install cloudflare/cloudflare/kitesurf`.

Kitesurf remains free during beta with per-account limits. Cloudflare says open-sourcing it is planned but not ready yet.

## Questions this post answers

### What new features did Cloudflare add to its Kitesurf agent browser?

Cloudflare added WebMCP support to Kitesurf, letting AI agents call functions that sites expose directly instead of simulating clicks or scraping pages. The update also raised Web Platform Test subtest coverage from about 230,000 to over 730,000, added full Browser Run API coverage across CDP, Playwright, Puppeteer, and MCP, Worker-bound Quick Actions, and a terminal rendering mode for Kitty, Ghostty, and WezTerm.

### Is Cloudflare's Kitesurf browser open source?

No, Kitesurf is not open source yet, though Cloudflare has stated that open-sourcing it is planned. The browser is currently free to use during its beta phase, with per-account usage limits applied in the meantime.

_Developers evaluating whether to adopt Kitesurf now or wait can follow its beta status via daily.dev._

### Should I use a browser layer like Kitesurf or a direct MCP server for AI agent integrations?

It depends on the use case: Kent C. Dodds argued that if customers already interact with a service through an agent, exposing a regular MCP server directly is more efficient than routing through a browser layer like Kitesurf, since the browser adds overhead that isn't always necessary. Browser-based tools like Kitesurf make more sense when agents must interact with sites that lack a direct API.

_Developers deciding between MCP servers and browser-based agent tooling can weigh these trade-offs on daily.dev._
