# Cloudflare's new cf CLI covers the whole API and is built for agents

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Cloudflare has opened a beta of cf, a new CLI designed to be driven by AI agents as much as by humans, mirroring the full Cloudflare API with over 3,000 operations compared to Wrangler's roughly 280 commands. Key changes include JSON-by-default output for easier parsing, a natural-language search command to find operations without memorizing names, a type-checked cloudflare.config.ts replacing TOML/JSONC configs, and a switch from esbuild to Vite. Existing Workers can migrate via the cf migrate command, and Cloudflare says it will support Wrangler for 18 months after the beta ends before pointing users to cf in a final major Wrangler release.

## Content

Cloudflare has put out an open beta of `cf`, a CLI that mirrors the entire Cloudflare API: over 3,000 operations, compared with roughly 280 commands in Wrangler. It is agent-first. Output defaults to JSON so an agent can read it without scraping, and there's a natural-language search command, `cf cli search`, for finding the operation you need.

That search command is the feature people keep singling out. @jamesqquick called it the coolest part of the release: if you can't remember which command to use, you ask in plain English. It helps humans and agents about equally, which is rare for a CLI feature.

Two other things stand out. @MattieTK noted that `cf` also exposes Cloudflare's beta programmatic configuration. And @somhairle_m pointed out you can run any Workers AI model straight from the terminal. There's even a slightly dizzying version of that, where an agent inside your terminal drives the tool that runs other models.

## Configuration and migration

Wrangler's TOML/JSONC config is replaced by a TypeScript file, `cloudflare.config.ts`, with type-checked bindings and triggers. `cf` uses Vite by default and drops esbuild. A `cf migrate` command converts existing Workers to the new setup.

Wrangler isn't going away overnight. Cloudflare says it will keep supporting it for 18 months after the beta ends, then ship a final major version that redirects users to `cf`.

## The AWS comparison

@QuinnyPig called `cf` "pretty close to magical," and set it against the AWS CLI, whose GitHub repo still defaults to the deprecated v1 branch. v2 became the recommended version years ago. He opened a GitHub discussion about fixing the default branch in 2023, and it still hasn't been done. It's a small thing, and a fair illustration of how differently the two companies are treating their command-line tooling right now.

## Questions this post answers

### What is Cloudflare's new cf CLI and how is it different from Wrangler?

Cf is a new beta command-line tool from Cloudflare that mirrors the full Cloudflare API, covering more than 3,000 operations compared to Wrangler's roughly 280 hand-written commands. It outputs JSON by default for easier parsing by agents, adds a natural-language search command to find operations, replaces TOML/JSONC config with a type-checked cloudflare.config.ts, and builds on Vite instead of esbuild.

### How do I migrate existing Cloudflare Workers from Wrangler to the cf CLI?

Run the cf migrate command, which converts existing Workers projects to work with cf. Cloudflare will continue supporting Wrangler for 18 months after the cf beta ends, after which a final major version of Wrangler will direct users toward cf, giving teams a defined window to plan the switch.
