CNCF and SlashData released the State of Cloud Native Development in Japan report, estimating Japan's cloud native developer community at approximately 950,000 as of Q1 2026, representing 41% of the country's developer population — slightly above the global average of 39%. Despite Japan's continued reliance on on-premises infrastructure (47% of developers deploy on-prem), cloud native adoption has grown significantly over two years. Platform engineering maturity is rising, with 88% of backend developers now working in standardized DevOps or platform engineering environments. Around 100,000 AI developers in Japan are also cloud native, reflecting AI's role as a key driver of cloud native infrastructure adoption.
