## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 5 discussions and 206 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-09-13).

**TL;DR:** Discussion centers heavily on trust and safety concerns around giving Codex system-level access, plus widespread frustration that the Electron-based desktop app is bloated, slow to reach Linux, and buggy compared to the CLI/TUI experience.

**Sentiment:** 15% positive · 30% mixed · 55% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some report real productivity gains from using the agent for coding and everyday computer tasks.
- The CLI/TUI tools are praised as fast, lightweight, and reliable compared to the desktop app.
- Sandboxing/VM isolation approaches let people use the tool while limiting risk.

**The pushback**

- Many argue the app should be treated like a trojan and run isolated in a VM rather than given direct system access.
- One user reported the installer created new users and rewrote NTFS permissions across their entire home directory, taking hours to fix.
- Confusion and skepticism over claims that Codex is 'open source' since only parts of it (cli/tui) actually are.
- Frustration that it took six months to bring an AI coding company's own Electron app to Linux, seen as ironic given their product claims.
- Complaints that the desktop app consumes excessive memory and has unresolved bugs like being unable to adjust thinking level.
- Concern about broad computer-use access letting the agent click through GUIs, browsers, and unrestricted MCP servers.

**By community**

- hackernews (skeptical): Commenters are largely wary of giving the app deep system access and critical of its Electron-based bloat and slow, buggy Linux rollout, though some defend real productivity value from CLI-based usage.

**Hottest debate:** Whether it's safe and reasonable to grant the agent direct system/file access versus requiring strict sandboxing or VM isolation.

**Open questions**

- Which parts of Codex are actually open source versus proprietary.
- Why a well-resourced AI company took six months to ship a working Linux desktop app.
- What caused the reported Windows NTFS permission corruption during installation, and whether it's a known unresolved issue.

**Highlights**

> And that's not a joke, I made the mistake of installing this on my Windows machine just to test it out quickly last week. It created 2 new users and then assigned new NTFS permissions for every single file under my user directory to them. This of course wrecked havoc, ssh refused to work, several applications refusing to start and a ton of permission errors. It did this without even a warning in the background and it also does not undo any of it when you uninstall it. It took around 3 hours to fix it by updating ~10 million NTFS permissions for every single file under my user directory.

> The most remarkable things about this announcement: - Electron based app: Electron is a framework sold on the basis of enabling rapid cross-platform development at the cost of performance. - Frontier AI company: AI is sold on the basis of enabling rapid development - App was released in February & took 6 entire months to port to Linux

> They replaced a pretty decent native Swift Mac app (with only some chronic state management bugs), weighing ~100MB ish, with the Codex app that most people don't need, made in Electron, which takes minimum 5GB+ including filesystem cruft. Today I ran into a memory leak that froze the app and made the Renderer process take 5GB, then 10GB of RAM. That was after I asked it to only touch 3 text files in its working directory, after which it sparked macOS permission prompts to access my Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and other apps' data. Thank god for the web platform and web apps.

> They ship with their own sandboxing by default, and Codex specifically is open source.

> Is this the same thing that broke out of the sandbox and into HuggingFace? Or we are just assuming that was a PR stunt, which it almost certainly was. Either way, this shit isn’t getting near my system.
