# Cognitive Debt: The Hidden Cost of the Agentic SDLC

**[Agentic Engineering](https://daily.dev/sources/agentic)** · [@rizwanul](https://daily.dev/rizwanul) · 1 min read · 85 upvotes · 12 comments

## Summary

An argument that small startups face a hidden 'cognitive debt' from over-adopting agentic AI development workflows, where code reviews go unread and AI-generated slop accumulates. The author, who uses AI tools daily, warns that unlike large companies, a three-or-four-person team can't absorb the risks of unchecked AI-driven code, and raises the question of how much AI adoption is sustainable versus staying deliberately 'human' in the SDLC.

## Content

"Code is no longer the bottleneck." It's probably the most widely spoken sentence of the agentic SDLC era. Anthropic even released [The AI-Native SDLC playbook](https://academy.claude.com/courses/ai-native-sdlc-playbook/introduction), which is free and genuinely worth reading.

The question is, how many of us are actually adopting it? And I'm not talking about large corporations here. I'm talking about small startups with three or four developers and very limited resources. That's where I keep coming back to the same worry: what's the cognitive debt we're taking on? The hidden risk in AI-driven development, in code reviews nobody really reads, and in plain FOMO.

Let me be clear about where I stand, because this argument gets misread in both directions. I'm not anti-AI and I'm not anti-agentic-SDLC. I use this stuff every day and I'd be slower without it. What I'm against is AI slop, and the unnecessary cognitive load that comes with it, the kind that quietly breaks a four-person team. A large company can absorb that load. A startup with three developers cannot.

So how much AI should we adopt, and how much should we stay human about it? That's what this post is about.

> This post resonates deeply. Every point you touch on is something I've been thinking about recently. In my opinion, one of the most underrated factors, and one many teams and organizations fail to consider, is the section on "How this actually breaks a small team." We're seeing it across the industry right now, and it's becoming a real problem, especially when you lose someone with deep industry knowledge and have no one to replace them.

> Well, its all still a trial and error method the companies are trying. Agentic SDLC with human gates & guardrails is the future and that is where we see the emerging 'software factory' trend too. So, I feel like small teams can still afford to adopt the agentic SDLC approach wherever possible and not just for writing the code. For example, even though they may use a code review agent, a human reviwer can still verify if its all correct. Similarly, instead of just using AI Agents to do CI/CD, a huam can just have an overlook if everything is taken care of properly. But at at end, I believe it...

> Agree, review is the step a small team can't drop. Our upstream gVisor fix was written with an AI assistant, and the commit has an Assisted-by line. My first version worked but went too far: it took down the entire sandbox to free one stuck thread. The maintainer pushed for stopping only the stuck subprocess, and that's what merged.
