# Coherence Quantum raises €2.78M seed round to cut heat and wiring in quantum computers

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Finnish startup Coherence Quantum, spun out of Aalto University's Quantum Computing and Devices group, raised €2.78 million in a seed round led by Lifeline Ventures, with former MySQL CEO Mårten Mickos also participating. The company builds cryogenic signal conditioning and higher-density signal interfaces to tackle wiring, heat, and noise bottlenecks as qubit counts scale. Scaling from a few hundred to a thousand qubits requires at least 3,000 control lines, more than a standard dilution refrigerator can hold, and over 99% of control signal energy dissipates as heat inside the fridge, adding noise near the qubits. The company holds four patent applications covering components like a tunable filter and a 'quantum dial' to isolate qubits from noise while keeping them controllable. Funds will go toward a lab in Espoo, prototypes, manufacturing, and team growth.

## Content

Coherence Quantum, a Finnish startup spun out of Aalto University's Quantum Computing and Devices group, has raised €2.78 million in seed funding. Lifeline Ventures led the round. Mårten Mickos, the former MySQL CEO, also participated.

The company works on cryogenic signal conditioning and higher-density signal interfaces for solid-state quantum processors. The aim is to manage wiring, heat and noise as qubit counts grow.

## The wiring problem

CEO Aashish Sah says the numbers get awkward fast. Going from a few hundred qubits to a thousand takes at least 3,000 control lines, more than a standard dilution refrigerator can hold. On top of that, over 99% of a control signal dissipates as heat inside the fridge, and that heat adds noise around the qubits.

Coherence Quantum wants to move signal processing closer to the quantum processor, which would reduce the number of cables running into the fridge.

## The technology

The company has four patent applications. They cover components such as a tunable filter and what it calls a "quantum dial," designed to isolate qubits from noise while keeping them controllable.

## What the money is for

The funds will go toward a lab in Espoo, product prototypes, manufacturing processes and a larger team. Sah leads the company, with Suman Kundu as CTO and Erkki Soininen as CPO.

## Questions this post answers

### why does scaling qubit count create a wiring bottleneck in quantum computers

Scaling quantum processors from a few hundred to a thousand qubits requires at least 3,000 control lines, more than a standard dilution refrigerator can physically hold. Additionally, over 99% of a control signal dissipates as heat inside the fridge, and that heat introduces noise around the qubits, compounding the engineering challenge as systems grow.

### how much funding did Coherence Quantum raise and who led the round

Coherence Quantum, a Finnish startup spun out of Aalto University's Quantum Computing and Devices group, raised €2.78 million in a seed round led by Lifeline Ventures. Former MySQL CEO Mårten Mickos also participated as an investor. The funds will support a lab in Espoo, product prototypes, manufacturing processes, and team expansion.
