Google is evolving Android from an operating system into an 'intelligence system' by introducing AI-powered platform features. A key new API called App Functions — available as both an Android platform API and a Jetpack library — lets developers expose their app's capabilities as on-device MCP servers, enabling AI agents like Gemini to orchestrate tasks across multiple apps. A live demo shows how an Android Studio skill can automatically generate App Functions for a sample news app, allowing Gemini to list topics, retrieve articles, and even send content to another app via a chat application. App Functions integration with Gemini is currently in private preview, but developers can start building with the API now.
