## Summary

Dario Amodei sparked backlash after conceding that AI industry promises like curing cancer have become cliché, timing that critics noted lands weeks before Anthropic's reported $2 trillion IPO. Naval Ravikant called out the contradiction of warning about AI danger while keeping models proprietary, proposing that models trained on open data be opened after 12 months. Yann LeCun pushed his usual open-models argument, while Amodei defended tiered regulation like California's SB 53 and a FINRA-style oversight body, arguing open weights just shift power to whoever has the most compute. Separately, Bruce Schneier and Nathan Sanders argued the entire safety debate may be moot given shaky unit economics and competition from open-source and Chinese models, half-jokingly floating nationalization as an alternative.

## Content

Dario Amodei picked a fight on three fronts this week, and it's happening right as Anthropic tries to sell Wall Street on a $2 trillion valuation.

First front: Naval went after him directly on his own turf. His argument is simple and a little brutal: if Anthropic trained on the open web, the open web should eventually get something back. "You're the one talking doom and gloom, and you're building God, but you're not going to keep God on a leash for yourself, Dario," he said, floating a rule where labs would have to open-source models 12 months after training on public data. His framing: nobody wants "a priest controlling God for the rest of us."

Second front: Amodei actually agreed with part of the broader criticism, just not the part people wanted him to. On X, he admitted AI companies, his own included, haven't delivered on the big promises, and called "AI will cure cancer" more cliché than inspiring at this point. But he wouldn't take the blame for the industry's messaging, pinning public distrust instead on general corporate skepticism. An OpenAI employee pushed back, pointing out that pharma delivers actual breakthroughs and still gets hated on for pricing and access, so
