Dark Web Trends 2026: Ransomware, AI And Cyber Threats

The dark web has evolved from a stolen-data marketplace into an operational hub for cybercrime. In H1 2026, five ransomware groups (Qilin, Akira, The Gentlemen, DragonForce, INC Ransom) accounted for over 56% of ransomware activity, while initial access brokers are selling pre-compromised corporate network access, shortening defenders' response windows. Identity-based attacks now dominate, with credentials and session tokens being the primary traded assets. Geopolitical events like the February 2026 Middle East escalation triggered over 70 hacktivist groups and 8,000+ conflict-themed domains. AI is lowering the barrier to entry for attackers by automating reconnaissance and scaling phishing, while defenders are using AI-driven analysis to process dark web data in near real time. Proactive dark web monitoring is now considered an essential security capability rather than an optional intelligence exercise.
