## Summary

Day 7 of a 60-day TypeScript series covers how to mark object fields as optional using the `?` operator. Optional properties let you model real-world data that may be incomplete without forcing placeholder values, while still preventing arbitrary untyped keys from being added to the object.

## Content

Real-world data is rarely perfect. Sometimes users fill out their profile completely; other times they skip optional fields like phone numbers or biographical details.

If your object structures are too rigid, the compiler will force you to provide values for fields that do not exist yet. To handle this cleanly, you can use the question mark (`?`) operator to mark fields as optional.

This modifier tells the compiler that a property is allowed to be missing or undefined, giving your data contracts the flexibility they need. However, it still maintains strict boundaries—allowing a property to be optional does not mean an engineer can add completely random, untyped keys to that object later.

**Welcome to Day 7 of 60 Days of TypeScript.**

- **The Rule:** Add a `?` after a property name to declare it as optional data.

- **The Goal:** Build flexible, real-world data contracts without sacrificing type safety.

> Optional chaining is good enough.

> I prefer a separate draft type once optional fields start changing the behavior of every consumer.
