The storage engine is modeled as a key-value store inspired by LSM trees, where WAL records are streamed to safekeeper nodes, processed by pageservers, and written to immutable layer files uploaded to cloud storage (S3/GCS). Two layer types exist: delta layers (WAL changes in a key/LSN range) and image layers (full page snapshots at a given LSN). The core read primitive, GetPage@LSN, reconstructs any page at any historical LSN by combining the nearest image layer with subsequent delta records.
