## Summary

Deepgram is acquiring Daily, the company behind the open-source voice agent framework Pipecat. Pipecat stays open source under its existing BSD V2 licence, and the companies are setting up an independent Pipecat Foundation with a steering committee that includes Deepgram's rivals. Kramer says Pipecat has more than 200 integrations, almost 400 contributors and was built by 18 engineers. Deepgram says Daily runs hosted real-time voice and video infrastructure on a network of 75 points of presence, and TechCrunch reports Daily has raised more than $62m. Deepgram also introduced the Real-Time Context Standard, an open protocol built with the Pipecat team that adds metadata on tone, speaker and background noise to voice AI systems.

## Questions this post answers

### What happens to the Pipecat open-source voice AI framework now that Deepgram acquired Daily?

Pipecat stays open source and free under its existing BSD V2 license. Deepgram and Daily are creating an independent Pipecat Foundation to govern it, with a steering committee that includes companies that compete with Deepgram. Pipecat already has more than 200 integrations, nearly 400 contributors, and was built by a team of 18 engineers.

### What is the Real-Time Context Standard (RCS) in voice AI?

RCS is an open protocol introduced by Deepgram, built with the Pipecat team, for passing metadata about audio alongside transcribed words between voice AI models. It carries three kinds of metadata: signals detected from audio like a whisper or unclear word, instructions for how a language model should use them, and guidance on how a reply should sound, letting an agent re-ask when unclear or reply quietly to a whisper.

### How much funding had Daily raised before being acquired by Deepgram?

Daily had raised more than $62 million from investors including Tiger Global, Nat Friedman, and Lachy Groom, according to PitchBook data cited by TechCrunch. Daily runs hosted real-time voice and video infrastructure across a network of 75 points of presence, and Deepgram has powered transcription inside Daily's products since 2019.
