# Delta Grows Up: Writes, Unity Catalog and Time Travel

**[Delta Lake Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/delta-lake)** · 9 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

DuckDB's Delta and Unity Catalog extensions have graduated from experimental status, adding INSERT write support, time travel queries pinned to specific Delta table versions, and full Unity Catalog integration for both OSS and Databricks implementations. Catalog Managed Tables now support Catalog Commits, letting Unity Catalog arbitrate concurrent writes across multiple DuckDB writers so exactly one commit lands per version while others receive conflict errors to retry. Snapshot loading also gets incremental loading in nightly builds, speeding up time travel across nearby versions ahead of the v1.5.3 stable release. UPDATE, DELETE, MERGE, and CREATE TABLE DDL remain unsupported but are planned.

## Questions this post answers

### Does DuckDB support writing (INSERT) into Delta Lake tables?

Yes, DuckDB's Delta extension now supports INSERT statements into Delta tables as of its graduation from experimental status. Multiple INSERTs within a single BEGIN/COMMIT block are stored as one atomic Delta version. UPDATE, MERGE, and DELETE are not yet supported but are planned for future work.

_Track DuckDB's evolving Delta Lake write capabilities on daily.dev before planning a lakehouse migration._

### How does Unity Catalog handle conflicting concurrent writes to a Delta table from DuckDB?

Unity Catalog's Catalog Commits feature arbitrates concurrent writes by staging each commit and registering it with Unity Catalog before it becomes visible, ensuring exactly one commit lands per version while other writers receive a conflict error and can retry. In a test with 20 concurrent DuckDB writers, 5 writes succeeded and 15 received conflicts, resulting in 35 total rows from 10 seeded plus 5 successful batches of 5.

_Developers coordinating multi-writer data pipelines can follow catalog-commit patterns like this on daily.dev._

### How do I enable Catalog Managed Tables and Catalog Commits for a Delta table in Unity Catalog?

Set the delta.feature.catalogManaged table property at creation time, which must be done via Spark or the Unity Catalog CLI since DuckDB's Unity Catalog extension does not yet support CREATE TABLE DDL. Once enabled, DuckDB writes automatically go through Unity Catalog's commit staging directory, with the INSERT syntax unchanged.

_Anyone setting up governed lakehouse writes can keep up with DuckDB and Unity Catalog changes on daily.dev._
