# Demonstrating The Sheer Lack Of Security In First Gen Cellular Networks

## Summary

First-generation AMPS cellular networks had zero encryption, allowing anyone with an Ericsson handset in test mode to eavesdrop on conversations by tuning to any channel. A demonstration recreates this vulnerability using software-defined radio to set up a local AMPS network, showing how a third handset can intercept calls between two others. Modern SDR hardware makes building such networks technically feasible, though spectrum regulations prohibit it.
