Denmark has filed a written intervention at the Court of Justice of the European Union, siding with Belgium in a case brought by tech companies including Google, Meta, Spotify, and Sony. The companies challenge Belgium's implementation of Article 15 of the 2019 Copyright in the Digital Single Market Directive, which requires platforms to pay press publishers for reusing their content. Denmark intervened to protect Danish media houses and ensure large platforms pay for news content. The CJEU ruling will set boundaries for how far EU member states can go in forcing platforms to negotiate payment with publishers, with implications extending to AI training data as well.
