# Deno's team jumps to Cloudflare, Topcoat framework pushes Rust-on-the-server

**[Web Digest](https://daily.dev/sources/webdev_digest)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Deno's whole team is joining Cloudflare and the runtime itself will stop development in a year, leaving Node, Bun, and workerd as the field, with nearly all of them sharing either V8 or JavaScriptCore under the hood. Tokio creator Carl Lerche introduced Topcoat, a server-rendered Rust framework that compiles only the interactive bits to JavaScript. TanStack's React benchmarking work exposed real performance gaps in popular design systems, with some freezing the UI well past budget. Smaller but concrete releases landed too: pnpm 12.17.0, ESLint v10.14.0, and a TypeScript trick for importing typed SQL files with zero codegen.

## Deno's team moves to Cloudflare, runtime sunsets in a year

Deno's entire team is joining Cloudflare, and the Deno runtime will stop development after one year. That leaves Node.js, Bun, and Cloudflare's workerd as the remaining major JS runtimes, but Node, Deno, and workerd all run on V8 while Bun runs on JavaScriptCore. The author compares the risk to IE6's old dominance and Heartbleed, warning that fewer independent engines means less pressure on standards bodies like WinterTC and a bigger blast radius when a shared engine bug hits. Independent forks Ende and Dodo have appeared, though Dodo has no releases yet and must be built from source. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/Ss4gMeW4p)

## Tokio's creator ships Topcoat, a server-first Rust web framework

Carl Lerche, who built Tokio, introduced Topcoat at P99 CONF: a framework where most app logic runs on the server and only HTML snippets get sent back to the browser on interaction. Rust still compiles down to JavaScript for the parts that genuinely need to run client-side, and rendering streams data into placeholders instead of blocking page load. Lerche is explicit that it's for typical database-driven apps, not something like Figma, and it only supports a subset of Rust syntax. Version 0.11 just shipped with localization support, including Fluent translations and date/number formatting. [Read more](https://daily.dev/feed-by-ids?id=x9428QBg5&id=V5Wphhp4A)

## TanStack's dropdown benchmark catches real UI freezes in MUI and React Spectrum

Den Odell stress-tested ten design systems by opening a 249-country dropdown and selecting 100 boxes with the CPU throttled 4x. Mantine handled it in 84ms, Ant Design in 134ms, but MUI and React Spectrum both blew past 200ms and froze the UI. The React Spectrum slowdown traced to React Aria measuring dropdown options one at a time and forcing a layout recalculation on each — a fix is already in review. Separately, a React.lazy quirk means a lazy component suspends on first render even with its code already loaded, and React only reveals suspended content once every 300ms. ## Reylo types SQL files directly in TypeScript, no codegen

Reylo lets you import .sql files straight into TypeScript with full type inference, using TypeScript 7.1's beta content mapper feature to read query types from a live Postgres, MySQL, or SQLite database. There's no generated-files step: a misspelled column is just a type error. It supports pg, postgres.js, mysql2, and better-sqlite3 as drivers, plus hosted databases like Neon, PlanetScale, Cloudflare D1, and Turso, and caches results in a .reylo/ directory keyed to the schema fingerprint. ## Also notable

- **pnpm 12.17.0 cuts install CPU by up to 15%:** Hardlinking from the store now stats each file once per install instead of once per linking package, cutting up to 15% system CPU on offline installs of large workspaces, and file permissions now follow the umask instead of being user-locked, fixing a longstanding Docker issue. - **ESLint v10.14.0 patches a vulnerable dependency:** The release bumps minimatch to 10.2.6 to drop a vulnerable brace-expansion package and fixes crashes in no-restricted-globals and no-invalid-this plus invalid autofixes in object-shorthand and yoda. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/gaCzmCAUE)
- **Chrome DevTools MCP: screenshots cost 1,196 tokens, snapshots don't:** A 1280x720 screenshot costs about 1,196 tokens on Claude because image tokens scale with pixel dimensions, not file size, which is why the tool reference recommends the accessibility-tree snapshot by default for coding agents. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/W7psGHJwT)
- **Shiki swap cuts a Next.js bundle by 3.38 KB despite bigger source:** Replacing next-mdx-remote-client's syntax highlighter with Shiki in a Next.js 16.3.8 site dropped the compressed bundle from 50.14 KB to 46.76 KB, even though Shiki's modules are roughly double the size on paper, thanks to lazy loading and swapping Oniguruma for the JS regex engine.
