# Deno team joins Cloudflare; Deno Deploy shuts down in six months

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 8 upvotes · 5 comments

## Summary

The Deno team is joining Cloudflare, with future work consolidating onto a shared platform called celld, built on the Cloudflare Workers programming model and Durable Objects. Deno Deploy will shut down in six months, with paying customers offered migration support to Cloudflare Workers. The Deno runtime gets one more year of bug fixes and security updates before development ends, though it remains open source. JSR continues operating with its infrastructure moving to Cloudflare, and rusty_v8 support continues alongside integration into workerd. Anyone running Deno in production, especially on Deno Deploy, needs to plan a migration path soon.

## Content

The Deno team is joining Cloudflare. The stated goal is to radically simplify self-hosting of Workers and Durable Objects, so developers can use the same primitives in more environments than Cloudflare's own network.

## What happens to Deno's products

Future development moves toward a shared platform built on the Cloudflare Workers programming model and Durable Objects, called celld.

- **Deno runtime:** it gets bug fixes and security updates for one more year, after which development ends. It stays open source.
- **Deno Deploy:** it shuts down in six months. Paying customers get migration support to Cloudflare Workers.
- **JSR:** it keeps operating, with its infrastructure moving to Cloudflare.
- **rusty_v8:** support continues, along with integration work into workerd, the open-source Workers runtime.

## Why it makes sense

The deal had been predicted. Ryan Dahl released celld in August, and plenty of people read it as a signal asking Cloudflare to buy Deno. Deno was reportedly running low on VC funding with no obvious path to another round. Cloudflare, for its part, wanted a better self-hosting off-ramp to ease enterprise fears about vendor lock-in.

The likely outcomes: a Rust rewrite of workerd, continued work on making Durable Objects self-hostable, and at least near-term stability for the Deno runtime. That last one comes with a caveat, because most contributions to Deno have historically come from Deno company employees.

@wesbos summed up the reaction: "SITUATION DETECTED: Cloudflare acquiring Deno."

My read: the open-source runtime getting one more year of fixes is the part worth watching. A year is enough to migrate, but it's not a long-term commitment.

## Questions this post answers

### What happens to Deno Deploy now that the Deno team is joining Cloudflare?

Deno Deploy shuts down in six months. Paying customers are offered migration support to move their workloads to Cloudflare Workers, which is the platform the Deno team is now building on as part of a shared system called celld, based on the Cloudflare Workers programming model and Durable Objects.

_Teams planning a Deno Deploy migration can track related Cloudflare Workers coverage on daily.dev._

### Is the Deno runtime still being developed after the Cloudflare acquisition?

No, active development effectively ends. The Deno runtime receives only bug fixes and security updates for one more year, after which development stops, though it remains open source. This is a wind-down window rather than a commitment to new features, so production users should plan where to migrate next.

_Developers tracking the Deno runtime's future can follow ongoing updates on daily.dev._

### What happens to JSR and rusty_v8 after Deno joins Cloudflare?

JSR keeps operating, with its infrastructure moving to Cloudflare. rusty_v8 support continues as well, alongside integration work into workerd, Cloudflare's runtime for Workers, suggesting these components will persist as part of the combined Cloudflare and Deno technology stack.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 2 discussions and 380 comments across hackernews, lobsters, x (as of 2026-10-09).

**TL;DR:** The reaction is mostly surprise and resignation rather than celebration, with many framing this as the end of independent JS runtimes now that both Bun and Deno have been absorbed by larger companies, while others see upside in Cloudflare gaining Ryan Dahl and consolidating around celld/Workers. Deno is joining Cloudflare: The dominant read is that this is an acquihire dressed up as a partnership: Cloudflare wanted the Deno team (and their celld tech) but is killing the Deno runtime and Deno Deploy, leaving users to migrate; reactions range from resigned shrugs to real frustration from invested users.

**Sentiment:** 11% positive · 28% mixed · 61% skeptical

**The case for**

- Getting Ryan Dahl and the Deno team is seen as a strong hire for Cloudflare.
- Some see migrating off Deno as straightforward, especially with AI-assisted tooling, so the practical impact is overstated.
- Some think Workers compatibility could become a useful portability/self-hosting layer that Deno was missing.
- A few note celld being folded into workerd could yield a solid self-hostable alternative to Cloudflare's own infrastructure.
- A few expect celld development to accelerate now that it has more backing.

**The pushback**

- Several see this as the end of independent JS runtimes now that Node is the only one left unacquired.
- Many call this a thinly veiled acquihire where Cloudflare wanted the team/tech (celld) but not the Deno product itself.
- Some express sadness that Deno, seen as the last trustworthy independent runtime, is being folded into a larger company.
- Frustration that the runtime's discontinuation after one year was buried in the announcement rather than headlined.
- There's cynicism that both Bun and Deno ended up as infrastructure for bigger companies despite starting as independent 'fix node' projects.

**By community**

- hackernews (heated): A large, contentious thread mixing acquihire cynicism, anger from invested Deno users, runtime-wars debates (Bun vs Node vs Deno), and disagreement over how big a deal the migration really is.
- lobsters (skeptical): Commenters frame the move as Deno being acquihired and effectively discontinued, with some side discussion on downstream impact for projects like yt-dlp.
- x (mixed): Replies mix nostalgia and concern about runtime independence with genuine curiosity about what celld and Workers compatibility will mean going forward.

**Hottest debate:** Whether this marks the end of independent JS runtime competition now that both Bun and Deno have been acquired by larger companies.

**Open questions**

- Will Deno Deploy fully turn into Workers, or will both run side by side for a while?
- Will the open-source Deno runtime actually be picked up and maintained by the community after official development ends?
- How much does Workers compatibility become a portability/self-hosting layer for projects currently on Deno?
- What will happen to companies and tools (e.g. yt-dlp, Slack plugins, Netlify/Supabase edge functions) that built heavily on Deno?
- What is celld exactly and how does it relate to the acquisition?

**Highlights**

> "Deno is being discontinued and its development team will be acquired by Cloudflare" seems like the actual honest headline

> On the [Cloudflare side](https://blog.cloudflare.com/deno-joins-cloudflare/) they explain a bit more in Cloudflares motives for buying Deno/sunsetting the runtime. Basically, they want to merge celld, an open source runtime for Durable Objects (basically, Cloudflare Workers with State), with the existing Cloudflare Workers runtime, workerd. What's kinda curious to me is that the celld runtime is only around 2 months old; Cloudflare says they're not buying out their competition, pointing to workerd being open source (and apparently being deployable by unnamed former clients), but it's pretty weird to both immediately buy out Deno for a newly launched product and to specifically cite that they're doing it for the one product tied to Cloudflare itself. It feels like there's a backroom conversation that's missing here, one we probably won't ever be privy to. --- wrt the Deno runtime itself, I wonder what this will mean for the yt-dlp project. A while ago they had to drop their own mini-JavaScript engine due to it becoming increasingly fragile and unmaintainable in the face of constant changes by Google, and just told people to install Deno as the "blessed" JavaScript engine. They'll probably have to start looking for a new recommended engine that meets those demands, which on their wiki probably will mean either node or QuickJS (as apparently Bun got deprecated due to excessive LLM usage - which got specifically highlighted over Deno, which also uses LLMs, but apparently to a lesser degree.)
