Domain modelling is not a linear process of mapping real-world concepts to code. Using a real case study from oil rig control systems, the authors show how a missing concept — 'alert condition' — was invented by designers rather than discovered in the domain. This distinction between alarms (the sound) and alert conditions (the underlying state) resolved critical logging inaccuracies and opened new modelling possibilities. The key insight: Ubiquitous Language is a constructed, purposeful language distinct from natural domain language, and good design can reframe and enrich the problem domain rather than merely reflect it.
