# Designing Claude Loops: The Six Core Components of an AI Workflow

## Summary

A structured approach to building Claude loops — repeatable AI workflows made up of six components: Trigger, Context, Action, Verification, State Update, and Decision. Rather than making Claude fully autonomous, the goal is to systematize the prompting process so repetitive, multi-step tasks become more reliable, manageable, and scalable.

## Content

Many people begin using Claude by writing prompts manually. They explain the task, provide the necessary context, wait for a response, review the output, and then decide what to ask next. This approach works well for one-time tasks or simple requests. However, as work becomes more repetitive, requires multiple iterations, or depends on maintaining context over time, manually prompting the model at every step becomes less efficient.

This is where a Claude loop becomes valuable. Instead of interacting with Claude manually throughout the entire process, you create a lightweight workflow that guides each interaction. You define the objective, supply the necessary context, allow Claude to perform the next task, verify the outcome, record progress, and determine whether another iteration is required.

The key idea is not to make Claude completely autonomous. Rather, it is to make the prompting process itself part of a structured system. By doing this, repetitive workflows become more reliable, easier to manage, and far more scalable.

A typical Claude loop consists of six core components:

Trigger – An event that starts the workflow, such as a manual command, a scheduled job, a file change, a Git event, or a failed CI/CD pipeline.

Context – Claude gathers the information it needs, including the task description, relevant files, project guidelines, and any progress from previous iterations.

Action – Claude performs the next logical step, whether that's generating a report, updating code, drafting a fix, reviewing documentation, or categorizing issues.

Verification – The output is validated against predefined criteria, such as passing tests, linting rules, checklists, schemas, or expected output formats.

State Update – The workflow records what was completed, what changed, any issues encountered, and the next recommended action.

Decision – Based on the results, the workflow either finishes, requests human review, or begins another iteration to continue making progress.

By following this structured approach, Claude can handle longer, more complex workflows while keeping each step organized, verifiable, and easy to monitor.
