Discord's voice and video calls just got much more secure, but it's still leaving text messages exposed

Discord has rolled out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for all voice and video calls as of March 2026, covering all users by default without requiring opt-in. Stages are excluded due to their public nature. However, Discord has explicitly stated there are no plans to extend E2EE to text messages, citing the significant engineering challenge of rebuilding features that were designed assuming unencrypted text. This leaves Discord's primary communication medium — text chat — still unprotected from server-side access.
