# Double Fine lays off 23 as it splits from Xbox and returns to independence

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 3 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Double Fine Productions is laying off 23 employees (roughly 25% of its staff) as it separates from Microsoft's Xbox Game Studios and returns to independent status. Studio head Tim Schafer announced the cuts on Bluesky, calling them necessary for survival during the transition. Microsoft acquired Double Fine in 2019 for $13.2 million. The layoffs are part of a broader Xbox restructuring — described as the largest in the division's history — eliminating 3,200 roles across gaming operations. Compulsion Games is also becoming independent, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are reportedly being shopped for new ownership. The restructuring has prompted union protests and legal action in both the U.S. and Canada.

## The numbers

Microsoft's Xbox division had a rough fiscal 2026. Full-year revenue dropped 7%, with hardware down 29% year-over-year — a $1.7 billion decline driven by lower console sales volumes. Xbox content and services fell another 5% for the year, and in Q4 alone, content and services dropped 10% while hardware fell 13%.

This came despite 200 million new players joining the platform during FY26. The player growth didn't translate into revenue growth, which is the kind of gap that tends to prompt restructuring memos.

For context on the broader financial picture: Microsoft spent nearly $70 billion acquiring Activision Blizzard, has committed over $130 billion in new data center leases, and recently raised Xbox hardware prices citing component shortages tied to AI infrastructure investment. The gaming division is clearly not the company's top priority right now.

## The layoffs and studio changes

Microsoft announced 4,800 layoffs globally, with 3,200 coming from the gaming division — described internally as the "most significant restructuring in Xbox history." Around 1,600 roles were cut in early July, with another 1,600 planned for FY27.

Five studios were affected:

- **Double Fine Productions** and **Compulsion Games** became independent
- **Ninja Theory** and **Undead Labs** entered negotiations for new ownership
- A fifth studio was also divested

The restructuring has prompted union-organized protests and legal action against Microsoft in both the U.S. and Canada over alleged mishandling of the layoffs.

## Double Fine specifically

Double Fine cut 23 employees — about 25% of its workforce — as part of the transition back to independence. Studio head Tim Schafer announced the cuts on Bluesky, framing them as necessary for the studio's survival.

Microsoft had acquired Double Fine in 2019 for $13.2 million. The studio released Psychonauts 2 under the Xbox banner. Now it's back on its own, smaller than before.

Laid-off developers across the division have warned publicly that the cuts risk losing critical institutional knowledge — the kind of thing that doesn't show up on a balance sheet until a few years later when projects start struggling.

## The FY27 plan

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma published an internal memo outlining what she's calling the "Four C's" framework for FY27:

- **Core** — console-first focus, strengthening the platform
- **Content** — growing major franchises (three Xbox franchises reportedly generate over $1 billion annually each)
- **Creation** — investing heavily in Minecraft as a creator platform
- **Connection** — expanding into film, TV, consumer products, and global partnerships including China

Sharma's stated goals: return Xbox to growth by end of FY27, reach 100 million daily active users, and hit double-digit player and engagement growth by FY30.

The memo included the line: "We will not live on past successes or be trapped by past failures." CEO Satya Nadella has also expressed confidence in the FY27 turnaround, citing strong IP and studio talent.

Whether that confidence is warranted is harder to say. The platform added 200 million players last year and still lost $1.7 billion in revenue. The studios being divested or cut loose represent years of accumulated expertise. And the company is simultaneously raising hardware prices while trying to grow its player base.

The FY27 targets are ambitious. The gap between where Xbox is now and where Sharma wants it to be is real.
