The DRBD driver was merged into the kernel in 2009 but has since diverged significantly from the actively maintained out-of-tree version. A patch series of over 7,000 lines has been submitted, and Linux block maintainer Jens Axboe proposed a staged approach via a topic branch (for-7.1/drbd) to gradually vet the changes across several kernel releases.
