Valve engineer Timur Kristóf is leading work to add GFX IP block soft reset support to the AMDGPU Linux driver, initially targeting GFX8 hardware (Polaris, Fiji, Tonga, Carrizo). This improvement allows resetting just the graphics IP block without losing VRAM contents or resetting the entire GPU, providing a better recovery path when GPU jobs hang. The patch series reworks AMDGPU reset handling, removes defunct code, and fixes issues with compute rings hanging and increased power consumption after reset on GFX8. Expansion to older GCN 1.0/1.1 hardware is also being considered.
