Egerton MS 1995

A researcher who previously studied the Book of St Albans (1486) and its terms of venery (collective nouns like 'an exaltation of larks') commissioned the British Library to digitize the relevant folios of Egerton MS 1995 (circa 1450) to verify that this manuscript contains the spelling 'exaltacyon of larkys.' The post presents a rough transcription of the manuscript's content, including extensive tables of collective nouns for animals, birds, fish, and social groups, carving terms for fowl and fish, lists of hawks assigned by social rank, and various other medieval texts on hunting, courtesy, and prophecy. The scan has also been uploaded to the Internet Archive for public access.
