MIT Professor Elazer R. Edelman has been named the recipient of the 2026-2027 James R. Killian Jr. Faculty Achievement Award, the highest honor MIT faculty can bestow on a colleague. Edelman, an engineer and cardiologist, helped develop drug-eluting cardiovascular stents now used in over 100 million patients worldwide. His career spans foundational research in atherosclerosis, vascular biology, tissue engineering, and controlled drug-delivery systems developed alongside Robert Langer. He also led MIT's COVID-19 PPE response effort, supplying 23% of all PPE across New England at the pandemic's peak. Beyond research, he is recognized as a dedicated mentor and teacher with over 30 years on the MIT faculty.
