## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 72 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-10-30).

**TL;DR:** The game itself is enjoyed as a fun, concrete way to teach gerrymandering, but a large part of the discussion is dominated by accusations that it's a near 1:1 rip-off of an existing game (Gerrymandle), plus complaints about hard-to-distinguish colors, some of which relate to color blindness.

**Sentiment:** 30% positive · 15% mixed · 55% skeptical

**The case for**

- Several found it fun and a good concrete teaching tool for gerrymandering, suitable for schools.
- Some called the horse theme more fun and cozy than the game it's compared to.
- People enjoy it as part of a daily puzzle-game routine alongside other 'dle' games.

**The pushback**

- Many argue it closely copies an existing game (Gerrymandle) down to specific UI choices and even default copy text.
- Multiple commenters, including some with color blindness, report difficulty distinguishing the horse and donkey colors.
- One commenter felt the competitive/scoring aspect is weaker than in the developer's earlier game, only tracking hints used.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): Enthusiasm for the puzzle concept is mixed with pointed criticism that it closely copies an existing gerrymandering game, alongside a side debate about color accessibility and an unrelated political tangent.

**Hottest debate:** Whether elect.horse is a legitimate riff on gerrymandering games or a shameless, near-identical copy of Gerrymandle.

**Open questions**

- Will the developers address the color-contrast/accessibility issues for colorblind players?
- Will they differentiate the game further from Gerrymandle to address the copying accusations?

**Highlights**

> enclose.horse was sold off not too long after it was published. The new owners now seem to be doing a shameless cash grab, ripping off gerrymandle.com 1:1, down to some particularly weird UI choices, and the text copy is transparently LLM-generated. It would be one thing if they added some kind of improvement or unique take, but reskinning (with assets you bought) and throwing ads on it is, frankly, just lame.

> I am a big fan of both enclose.horse and gerrymandle.com. I play both daily. But this rip-off makes me feel less inclined to continue playing enclose.horse. And yes, it is a rip-off, not merely a riff on the general puzzle game of this type. It's akin to joke stealing among comedians. It makes you lose respect for the joke stealer, even if their original stuff is good.

> Yes but surely you can see that this is copying much more than just the general idea of a game about gerrymandering.

> I know I've got deuteranopia. That doesn't help. I still can barely see the difference. What would have helped is picking two colors which weren't so close for people with such a common issue. What frustrates me is that this has happened even with color coding in video games where I myself was part of the UI team and flagged the issue a year before release. (Need For Speed, 2015)
