# Electric fields help guide neural activity, even from moment to moment

**[MIT News](https://daily.dev/sources/mit)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A new MIT Picower Institute study published in Cerebral Cortex demonstrates that local electric fields in the brain influence neural activity on a moment-to-moment basis through ephaptic coupling. Using Granger Causality analysis on data from animals performing a working memory task, researchers found that mesoscale electric fields dominate over individual neural spiking, acting as top-down control parameters. The strength of ephaptic coupling was proportional to variability in local field potentials. The researchers suggest that because electric fields can be externally manipulated, this understanding could lead to therapeutic interventions for neurological diseases by adjusting faulty circuits at the field level rather than individual synaptic connections.
