rOpenSci introduces 11 Latin American researchers selected for its 2026 Champions Program cohort, the second cohort to operate entirely in Spanish. Each champion is developing or improving an R package addressing real-world challenges in their disciplines — including labor market data access in Peru, spatial data anonymization, marine ecosystem modeling, air quality exposure estimation, bioinformatics tools, and more. The 12-month program includes training, mentorship, package development, and peer review participation, with the goal of strengthening open science and research software communities across Latin America.
