## Summary

A deep historical survey of email encryption from ARPANET origins through X.400, PGP, and S/MIME to the present day. Covers why end-to-end email encryption has largely failed to achieve mainstream adoption: X.400 required a global directory that never materialized, PGP's web-of-trust model proved too complex and unusable, and S/MIME thrives only in centrally managed enterprise environments. Explains the practical reality that most email today is encrypted in transit via STARTTLS (with DANE and MTA-STS helping prevent downgrade attacks), but not end-to-end. Argues that the tortured history of email encryption is really the history of E2E as an overlay fix for a fundamentally insecure protocol, and that transparent provider-level encryption — despite requiring trust in service providers — is why encryption actually gets used at scale.
