Over 300 Google employees and 60+ OpenAI employees have signed an open letter urging their companies to stand with Anthropic in its standoff with the Pentagon. Anthropic has refused the Department of War's demand for unrestricted access to its AI, specifically opposing its use for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weaponry. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened to label Anthropic a supply chain risk or invoke the Defense Production Act if the company doesn't comply. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed sympathy for Anthropic's position, and an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the company shares Anthropic's red lines. Google DeepMind's Chief Scientist Jeff Dean also voiced personal opposition to government mass surveillance.
