Databricks announced three new capabilities for enterprise app development at Data + AI Summit 2026: App Spaces, Genie App Builder, and Serverless Micro Apps. App Spaces lets admins define governance policies, data access, and security at the environment level so every app inherits those settings automatically. Genie App Builder provides an AI-assisted workflow where users describe an app in plain language and get a working internal app built on AppKit (a TypeScript SDK), with full awareness of Unity Catalog tables and governance policies. Serverless Micro Apps use a micro VM-based runtime for fast cold starts, per-app isolation, and usage-based pricing — making lightweight departmental tools economically viable. All three features are coming to Databricks Apps with private previews soon.
