# Enhanced HDMI Gaming Features Arrive for AMDGPU Linux Driver

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

The AMDGPU driver now enables Display Core (DC) by default for older AMD GCN 1.0/1.1 APUs on Linux, bringing modern features like Variable Refresh Rate, HDR, 10-bit color, and atomic modesetting to aging hardware. Recent patches add HDMI gaming features including VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode, with fixes for refresh rate calculations and mode transitions. These updates extend the lifespan of older AMD APUs by providing display capabilities previously only available on newer hardware or Windows systems.

# Enhanced AMD APU Support on Linux: Modern Features for Aging Hardware

Recent updates to the AMDGPU driver are a significant enhancement for aging AMD GCN 1.0/1.1 APUs on Linux, thanks to efforts from a Valve developer. This includes enabling the AMDGPU Display Core (DC) driver by default, which brings a suite of modern features to these older systems.

Among the newly supported functionalities are Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), DisplayPort/HDMI audio, HDR support, 10-bit color, and atomic modesetting. Previously reliant on the legacy Radeon driver, these older APUs now enjoy display capabilities on par with newer AMD graphics hardware.

Additionally, recent patches have been rolled out to integrate HDMI gaming features into the AMDGPU Linux kernel driver. These implementations provide HDMI VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) for a smoother gaming experience on HDMI displays. Despite initial challenges with HDMI Forum's stance on open-source HDMI 2.1 support, the new patches manage to incorporate configurable module parameters for ALLM and include desktop mode support for HDMI VRR.

The patches also feature critical fixes, such as improved ALLM triggering logic, maximum refresh rate calculations, and better handling of mode transitions to mitigate screen blanking issues. These updates aim to deliver FreeSync-like features available on DisplayPort and Windows systems, ensuring Linux users of older AMD hardware benefit from advanced display technologies.

Through these enhancements, older AMD APUs extend their relevance, delivering an enriched display and gaming interface, demonstrating the power of open-source cooperation in pushing the boundaries of existing hardware.
