# EU Adds Exemptions To User-Serviceable Batteries Rules

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

The EU's Battery Regulation, which was set to require user-serviceable batteries in portable devices by 2027, has been weakened by six new exemption categories. Smartwatches, fitness trackers, wireless earbuds, and other 'wet devices' are now exempt due to water-resistance concerns. Smartphones also get a partial exemption if their battery retains 83% capacity after 500 charge cycles, requiring only professional (not user) replacement. The author views these exemptions as disappointing, arguing that waterproofing and user-replaceability are not mutually exclusive, and that industry lobbying likely played a role. The Nintendo Switch 2 is cited as a positive example of a device that will still comply with the original rules.
