The probe alleges Huawei lobbyists paid cash to MEPs in exchange for political support on 5G security policy, with payments allegedly channelled through Huawei's EU public affairs director. Around 15 current and former MEPs are reportedly under investigation. The scandal runs parallel to the EU Commission's formal recommendation that all 27 member states remove Huawei and ZTE equipment from their telecoms infrastructure, with China threatening broad retaliation if the ban proceeds.
