# Everything I Know

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A transcript of Buckminster Fuller's 42-hour 'Everything I Know' lecture series from January 1975, covering his life's work including the Dymaxion house, car, geodesic domes, tensegrity structures, and Synergetics. The lectures span topics such as architecture, design, philosophy, mathematics, geometry, economics, and engineering. The Buckminster Fuller Institute has made the minimally edited transcripts available online and invites public participation in annotating and improving the document.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 30 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-08-04).

**TL;DR:** Commenters are broadly appreciative of Buckminster Fuller and the resource, sharing book recommendations and anecdotes about his remarkable career, while side-threading into a lively tangent about transcription as a profession and idle compute power.

**Sentiment:** 60% positive · 30% mixed · 10% skeptical

**The case for**

- Fuller's 'Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth' is recommended as a short, accessible entry point into his thinking.
- Fuller's core design philosophy — doing more with less — is praised as clear and compelling.
- The triangular-tiled visual design of the site is noted as elegantly on-brand.
- Fuller's late-career rock-star status and marathon lectures are highlighted as remarkable.

**The pushback**

- The videos are unavailable, limiting access to the actual lectures.
- The section ordering on the site appears scrambled (alphabetical by ASCII rather than by section number).
- Fuller's Synergetics texts contain many unsupported assertions and are difficult to parse, tempering enthusiasm for his deeper theoretical work.

**By community**

- hackernews (positive): Mostly appreciative discussion of Fuller's legacy and book recommendations, with tangential threads on transcription history and idle compute, plus mild criticism of the site's broken video links and disordered sections.

**Hottest debate:** Whether modern AI transcription tools can truly replace human transcriptionists, or whether human vetting remains essential for accuracy.

**Open questions**

- Will the broken video links on the site be fixed, or is the transcript the only accessible format?
- Is there an MCP (Model Context Protocol) interface for the content?
- Could modern audio/video cleanup tools improve the original recordings?

**Highlights**

> Towards the end of his life, Bucky had achieved rock star status and his lectures filled stadiums in all corners of the world. At age 88, he twice circumnavigated the globe to give nonstop addresses. And they weren't short - his talks routinely lasted between three and four hours without breaks. Truly a remarkable character.

> For those unfamiliar with Bucky, I highly recommend his book Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth. Its a short, light read. He has a really interesting take on technology’s role in pirates and he was a firm believer that there is enough resources for everyone. He even talks about the US’s vulnerability to an attack on its water system. https://archive.org/details/operatingmanualforspaceshipearth...

> At max, two full work weeks for a lightly trained amateur to transcribe 42 hours of decent but not great quality audio. A professional could do it in near realtime. For me, it is notable that this is notable for you. This used to be as ubiquitous of a profession in modern organizations as typists were. Many people's entire job was going to meetings and/or listening to calls, transcribing the conversation, not just taking notes. Professional stenographers transcribe in realtime with phonetic markers and everything. Even lightly trained transcriptionists can transcribe 1 hour of audio in 1.25-1.5 hours of wall clock time. For an amateur, you could probably get to a 1:2 ratio within a few hours. It's at max two full weeks of work.

> I really enjoyed reading about his inventions when I was growing up, it was inspiring to me. It’s also true though there’s a lot to be skeptical of, and it was also an education of sorts to go down the rabbit hole and read his Synergetics textbooks and discover he makes endless assertions that are not supported and also hard to parse.

> I'm not sure what's going on with the ordering of the sections, but it's definitely creative. - 01: Section 1 - 02: Section 11 - 03: Section 10 ... - 10: Section 3 - 11: Section 2 - 12: Section 12
