I guess the aim was to gather the critical mass during this era, then to slowly flip the switch. Once locked in, turn on monetization and wait for the user to accept the cost for the sake of maintaining habit memory. User's who leave will either struggle to learn a new workflow, or experience difficulty using a different framework because of change in response experience.
