The experimental Zones protocol has been merged into Wayland Protocols after over two years and 628 comments. This protocol introduces a new coordinate system for area-limited window positioning, allowing multi-window applications to hint where windows should be placed and maintain layering. Zones are per-client entities that compositors can reshape or eject windows from at any time, using resolution-independent coordinates. The protocol enables trusted processes to share coordinate systems for window positioning. Additionally, an experimental Cutouts protocol was merged to communicate display limitations like notches and low-resolution areas to clients.
